Dordrecht - rained out, but Spring has Sprung

Latest news on Linecasters and Rhodes – October 2002

The well-planned Dordrecht trip to Highland Lodge rained out completely. The owners of the lodge Luke and Vicky Bell said that some of her lakes were brown for the first time in many years.

September, our first month of spring here in Rhodes, did however live up to our expectations. In the first week Dr Benade from Gauteng, Janbert Reeders a local farmer and myself reeled in beautiful fish around the 19 – 21” mark on the Bell River (world class fishing). The rivers in and around the Rhodes / Barkly East area are at their spectacular best at the moment.

I also had the opportunity during September, together with a friend, to visit Basie Vosloos’ dam at Birkhill. Within 3 hours we caught 10 fish averaging 2 ½ – 3 lbs and one 4 ½ lb cock and a hen of close to 6 lbs. This venue is really worth a visit, regularly producing browns and rainbows of 8 – 9 lbs.

By the time most of our readers receive this newsletter, the latest edition (100th edition) of ‘The Complete Fly Fisherman’ will be on the shelves. This edition contains some really interesting information on tackle tests and venue reports. Linecasters has a feature on our July 2002 Inhaca trip – take a look!

‘The Complete Fly Fisherman’ will be hosting a festival at Sterkfontein Dam from the 30th October – 4th of November 2002. The festival will be held to commemorate their 100th edition. Most of the field editors and magazine contributors will be there assisting with guiding, slide shows, casting, fly tying etc. This will be my first visit to Sterkfontein Dam and P.J, the owner of T.C.F.F., assures me it will not be my last. Come along and meet P.J Jacobs, Tom Sutcliffe, Dean Riphagen, Mark Yelland, Tony Biggs and myself among many others.

Linecasters will be heading off to Inhaca straight after the T.C.F.F festival. We will be taking two groups of clients on a fly fishing trip of a lifetime! A report back will follow towards mid-November.

If you are planning a trip down to our neck of the woods, pack in some R.A.B’s, sawfly imitations, and foam beetles. The green beetles, sawfly and cranefly hatches are going to be prolific this summer season. For more information, click on contact us and give us a call or email us.
