Fred's Shuck Emerger ...

This fly was designed many years ago and the tying sequence features in Ed Herbst’s DVD, ‘A South African Fly tying journey with Ed Herbst and friends’ volume 1.

This fly should be fished to trout feeding on mayfly emergers that are ‘trapped’ within the water film on the surface.  It is a useful fly to have in your box especially when all other fly patterns are ignored by selective fish that feed on emergers and cripples.

A long 5 – 6X tippet/leader configuration is necessary for casting to selective fish in clear streams. Greasing the leader to within 6’’ (15cm) from the fly will ensure that the currents do not drag the leader/fly below . A very small strike indicator can also be used to locate the fly and it needs to be about 15” (30cm) from the fly.
