Fred’s foam body spider ...

This spider imitation created by Fred Steynberg is undoubtedly one of the most effective patterns in clear water streams in Southern Africa. The fly was invented to imitate the Wolf spider that are numerous along edges and banks of our streams and often fall prey to fish species such as trout. This pattern is extremely effective when fished to larger, sighted fish that will regard the imitation an irresistible morsel.

Long, 11 – 14’ leader/tippet configurations should be use to keep the imitation well clear of a floating line but 5X and 6X tippet is about as thin as one should use as the fly is a little bulky and might fail to turn over on the thinner tippets.
