The village of Rhodes is situated below the most Southern tip of Lesotho in the Southern Drakensberg - North Eastern Cape with the closest towns being Barkly East on the West side and Maclear on the East side. The Bell River runs through Rhodes and is one of the many Wild Trout streams accessible within half an hours drive from Rhodes. The other rivers and streams are the : Bokspruit, Riflespruit, Sterkspruit, Kraai River, Kloppershoekspruit, Langkloof River, Diepspruit.

How to get to Rhodes

From Johannesburg ...

  1. Looking down Rhodes main street early in the morningDrive to Bloemfontein via Kroonstad on the N1.
  2. Just out of Bloemfontein look for the N6 off-ramp that will take you to Reddersburg then Smithfield, Rouxville, Aliwal North and Barkly East.
  3. Once in Barkly East the gravel road to Rhodes is well marked and winds through the mountains for 59 km to Rhodes - the TROUT CAPITAL OF AFRICA.
  4. Your trip from Jo'burg to Rhodes should take about 8 hours.
  5. INTERNATIONAL CLIENTS: It is advisable to fly to Bloemfontein, hire a car at the airport and drive the scenic trip to Rhodes. Time traveling from Bloemfontien to Rhodes - approx. 4 hrs.

From Cape Town ...

  1. View of the sunsetting on thr Rhodes hillTake the scenic N1 from Cape Town past Worcester, through Beauford West to Colesberg.
  2. At Colesberg take the R58 which will take you through Venterstad, Burgersdorp to Aliwal North.
  3. From Aliwal North take the N6 to Barkly East and the last 59 km of gravel road through scenic mountains to our spectacular destination - Rhodes.
  4. A total of 9 - 10 hours on an exceptionally scenic route.
  5. INTERNATIONAL CLIENTS: International clients can fly to Bloemfontein, hire a car and drive to Rhodes.

From Durban ...

  1. From Durban to Rhodes it is approx. 700km or about 7 - 8 hours drive.
  2. Take the South Coast N2 road to Port Shepstone. At Port Shepstone follow the N2 up country to Kokstad, past Harding.
  3. From Kokstad drive along the N2 through Mount Frere then Qumbu. Then take the R396 which turns off right to Tsolo and then Maclear.
  4. Rhodes in the distance just before sunrise One may take the gravel road from Maclear to Rhodes which takes you over Naudes Nek Pass - the highest commercial pass in South Africa. We advise you to phone us beforehand to confirm the condition of the road. This gravel road will take you about 2 - 3 hours, an exceptionally scenic mountain pass.
  5. If you choose not to take the tar road, drive on from Maclear to Ugie then Elliot and Barkly East on the R58 and then a gravel road to Rhodes.
  6. INTERNATIONAL CLIENTS: Fly to Bloemfontein, hire a car at the airport and drive the scenic 4 hour trip to Rhodes.

WE WILL FETCH AND RETURN CLIENTS TO AND FROM EAST LONDON AND BLOEMFONTEIN AIRPORTS IF THAT IS THEIR NEED. IT TAKES APPROXIMATELY 4 HOURS TRAVEL FROM BOTH CITIES.
